Witch Hair began in Spring 2015 with a simple text message “What about the name Witch Hair?” from Joe Russo (guitar, vocals) to Ashley Kenney (bass, vocals.) After their bands played together at the Heirloom Arts Theater in August of 2014, Joe and Ashley felt an immediate bond. They knew they had to form a project where they could write and sing collaboratively and explore different musical avenues than they had in their current acts (Spectral Fangs, and Loom respectively). They truly met their musical match in the Fall of 2016 when Tom Connolly (drums, vocals) moved back from Philadelphia to Connecticut having played in several Philly bands including Forbidden Rooms, Ladies Auxiliary, Killer Bangs, and Tin Horses.
For a band that started by jamming on Breeders and Pixies covers it was an honor that their first show was opening for Kelley Deal (of the Breeders) and her band R. Ring at BAR in New Haven. The trio has continued a streak of playing with nationally lauded acts such as Charly Bliss, Laser Background, XETAS, and Lola Pistola ever since. The group has written songs about motorcycle gangs, cults, psychedelic breaks with reality, and activism. They have hosted two very successful fundraisers for Planned Parenthood and the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants. Always wearing their hearts on their sleeves, Witch Hair plans to continue writing songs about the current declining state of American Affairs with brutal honesty. As a New Haven based band, Tom, Joe, and Ashley feel strongly about continuing to raise money for local and national charities based in the area and using their platform to sharpen awareness around political and social justice related events. Outside of the band, Ashley is the mother of two children as well as a farmer, Joe creates music with his other indie music outfit Spectral Fangs, and Tom works at a birdwatching store (no joke)!
